The Functional Technique Approach

  • Osteopaths Laughlin and Stiles:
  • Simply: place the palpating hand over the tissues in question and with the other hand manipulate the spine or extremity until the area beneath the hand maximally softens.
  • Downside: requires much practice to feel the maximal point of released tissues
  • Upside: there is hardly any memorization.  It is all by feel.
  • Instructions: Greenman’s Principles of Manual Manipulation, 2nd edition and Positional Release Techniques by Chaitow.
  • What is important: YOU CAN FIND THE RELEASE POINT IF YOU PLAY WITH SOFTENING TISSUES AND FIND MAXIMAL PATIENT COMFORT
